On the central northern border of the LA panhandle, northeast of Shreveport; organized Mar 13, 1828 from Natchitoches Parish. Name Origin: For William Charles Cole Claiborne (1775-1817), governor of the Mississippi Territory (1801-05), of the Orleans Territory (1804-12), and of LA (1812-16).
