On the northwest coast of WA, bordered on the north by the Strait of Juan de Fuca; organized as Clalm County Apr 26,1854 (prior to statehood) from Jefferson County; spelling changed soon after. Name Origin: For the Indian tribe; name means 'strong people.'

Area (sq mi): 2670.34 (land 1739.45; water 930.89). Pop per sq mi: 40.10.
Pop 2005: 69,689. State rank: 18. Pop change: 2000-20005 8.00%; 1990-2000 14.30%. Pop 2000: 64,525 (White 87.40%; Black or African American 0.80%; Hispanic or Latino 3.40%; Asian 1.10%; Other 8.90%). Foreign born: 4.50%. Median age: 43.80.
Income 2000: per capita $19,517; median household $36,449; Pop below poverty level: 12.50%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $24,617-$27,737.
