Location: 50 miles northwest of Saint Louis, Missouri, beside the Mississippi River. Facilities: Visitor contact station, viewing sites, auto tour route. Activities: Educational programs, fishing, hunting, bicycling, berry and mushroom picking for personal consumption. Special Features: Site provides seasonal wetlands and permanent marshes by actively manipulating water levels and vegetative growth, which re-creates the changing habitats important to many types of migratory birds. Habitats: 3,750 acres of wetlands, impoundments, forests, grasslands, and crop fields. Access: Open during daylight hours. Portions of the refuge are closed seasonally to the public based on waterfowl migrations. Wild life: Bald eagle, king rail, shorebirds, bats, rabbits, deer, snakes, turtles, frogs.
