In central portion of western PA, northeast of Pittsburgh; organized Mar 11, 1839 from Venango and Armstrong counties. Name Origin: For the Clarion River, which flows through it. The rippling waters of the river sounded "like the notes of a distant clarion" to Daniel Stanard, one of the state surveyors.
