Clarke, Mary Francis (1803–87) religious foundress; born in Dublin, Ireland. Emigrating to the U.S.A. in 1833, she overcame financial woes to found a school in Philadelphia. She also formed a teaching community, the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which she relocated to a frontier region in Iowa (1843). How to thank TFD for its existence?
