Mac OS (MACintosh Operating System) The operating system used in Apple's Macintosh line of personal computers and servers. Since the introduction of the Macintosh in 1984, the Mac OS has been written for three hardware lines: Motorola, PowerPC and Intel. See Macintosh.Mac OS Designations The Mac OS used a "System n" numerical designation until 1994, when Apple renamed System 7 to Mac OS and introduced the Mac OS logo. The subsequent Mac OS 8 and Mac OS 9 used only version numbers, but as of the third version of Mac OS X (Mac OS 10), Apple added official animal monikers such as Jaguar and Leopard. For example, the Snow Leopard version of Mac OS X can be referred to as Snow Leopard, Mac OS X 10.6 or Mac OS 10.6. See Mac OS X.
