Civilis, Claudius Julius
(also Gaius Julius Civilis). Leader of the Germanic tribe known as the Batavi. The Batavi had been allied with Rome, but in 69 Civilis roused the tribe to rebellion. Other Germanic tribes and the Gallic tribes known as the Treveri and Lingones joined in the uprising. Although the rebellion was suppressed in 70, the Batavi secured freedom from taxation. Civilis’ fate is unknown. Want to thank TFD for its existence? Tell a friend about us, add a link to this page, add the site to iGoogle, or visit the webmaster's page for free fun content. |
