Clausius Rudolf Julius . 1822--88, German physicist and mathematician. He enunciated the second law of thermodynamics (1850) and developed the kinetic theory of gases clausius [′klȯz·ē·əs] (thermodynamics) A unit of entropy equal to the increase in entropy associated with the absorption of 1000 international table calories of heat at a temperature of 1 K, or to 4186.8 joules per kelvin.
