Functioned as part of Centre County in early years; first county commissioners elected 1812, courts established 1822. Name Origin: For Clearfield Creek, which runs through a part of the county where buffalo had cleared the undergrowth. Area (sq mi): 1153.80 (land 1147.32; water 6.49). Pop per sq mi: 72.20. Pop 2005: 82,783. State rank: 36. Pop change: 2000-20005 -0.70%; 1990-2000 6.80%. Pop 2000: 83,382 (White 97.10%; Black or African American 1.50%; Hispanic or Latino 0.60%; Asian 0.30%; Other 0.90%).
