In west-central PA, north of Altoona; organized Mar 26, 1804 from Lycoming and Huntingdon counties. Functioned as part of Centre County in early years; first county commissioners elected 1812, courts established 1822. Name Origin: For Clearfield Creek, which runs through a part of the county where buffalo had cleared the undergrowth
