Cleveland, Stephen Grover 

Born Mar. 18, 1837, in Caldwell, N. J.; died June 24, 1908, in Princeton, N. J. American statesman.

Cleveland was trained as a lawyer. A member of the Democratic Party, he was president of the USA from 1885 to 1889 and from 1893 to 1897. During his administration the gold standard was restored (1893) and a protectionist tariff was adopted (1894). Cleveland’s government conducted a harsh antilabor policy. In international affairs he developed the idea of Pan-Americanism.
