In central OK, south of Oklahoma City; original county; organized 1890 (prior to statehood) from Cherokee lands. Name Origin: For Grover Cleveland (1837-1908), twenty-second and twenty-fourth U.S. president.

    On the southern border of NC, west of Charlotte; organized as Cleaveland County Jan 11, 1841 from Rutherford and Lincoln counties. Present spelling adopted in 1887. Name Origin: For Col. Benjamin Cleaveland (1738-1806), a hero of the Battle of King's Mountain (1780).
