Clinical and Experimental Surgery, Institute of 

a research institute of the Ministry of Health of the USSR concerned with developing surgical methods of treating a variety of diseases. The institute was founded in Moscow in 1963 in the surgical clinic of the I. M. Sechenov First Moscow Medical Institute.

The institute’s clinical division consists (1976) of departments of cardiac, pulmonary, and mediastinal surgery; transplantation and artificial organs; portal hypertension; liver and biliary tract; esophagus and stomach; intensive therapy; blood transfusion; and artificial oxygenation. There also are pathomorphological, outpatient, research, medical and medical-engineering information, and technical divisions. In addition, there are departments and laboratories of experimental surgery, clinical physiology, roentgenology, anesthesiology, antibiotics, clinical diagnosis, and hormones.

The institute is one of the leading Soviet institutions engaged in plastic surgery of the heart, blood vessels, respiratory organs, esophagus, stomach, liver, and biliary tract. It is also well known for its work in organ transplantation, anethesiology, and resuscitation techniques. A major teaching center for hospital surgery, the institute arranges postgraduate courses every year for the teaching personnel of hospital surgical departments of medical institutes. It offers clinical internships and graduate programs. The institute accepts candidate’s and doctoral dissertations for defense.
