In a highly watered down summary, what Svensmark says is that galactic cosmic rays--radiation originating outside the solar system--seed cloud formation and that when solar activity is high, less cosmic radiation reaches Earth, reducing cloud cover and allowing more of the Sun's energy to penetrate and warm the atmosphere. Traditional weather sites are limited to describing cloud formations with still satellite pictures and text. Warm periods enhance cloud formation over the tropics, which makes days cooler and nights warmer. |
