clumber spaniel

clumber spaniel, breed of medium-sized sporting dog sporting dog, classification used by breeders and kennel clubs to designate dogs bred for pointing, flushing, and retrieving game. These dogs hunt by air scent—as opposed to most hounds, which are ground scenters—and their quarry is primarily game birds.

 developed in France and perfected at Clumber Park, an English estate. It stands about 17 in. (43.2 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs between 50 and 60 lb (22.7–27.2 kg). Its dense coat of straight, silky hair is lemon and white or orange and white and forms long, luxuriant fringes, or feathers, on the chest and legs. The heavy-boned, low, short body of the clumber resembles no other spaniel and suggests early crossbreeding with the basset hound. The tail is docked. Although a slow worker, the clumber makes an excellent hunter and retriever when trained. The Spaniel breed, Clumber Spaniel came into existence in Britain in nineteenth century It is assumed to be a combination of the Basset Hound and the earlier Spaniel types The Spaniel breed, Clumber Spaniel came into existence in Britain in nineteenth century.
While the Clumber spaniel and the labrador retriever must stay slim to qualify as top show dogs, flat faces without a muzzle on Pekingese are also no longer acceptable because they cause breathing difficulties.
In the 1940s, the Clumber spaniel was an endangered species, but thanks to the work of a Corbridge woman, the breed is now flourishing.
