A general approach to multivariate problems whose aim is to determine whether the individuals fall into groups or clusters.

To use multidimensional scaling and hierarchical cluster analysis the paper develops a dissimilarity measure from the switching matrix.
We carried out three levels of analysis: a) an elementary analysis involving simple visual inspection of a geographic phenomenon; b) a cluster analysis attempting the identification of possible "hot spots," and c) a contextual analysis aiming to explain relationships among geographic phenomena (Bailey and Gatrell 1995; Olson 1976).
