coachFour-wheeled, horse-drawn carriage with an enclosed body and an elevated seat in front for the driver. The coach originated in the 15th century in Hungary (where kocsi originally meant “wagon from the town of Kocs”). It was introduced in England in the mid-16th century. Coaches were used as public conveyances with inside seats for passengers (as in the stagecoach) and for mail delivery. Although meals in coach class on domestic flights largely have disappeared, most airlines offer meals on flights longer than five hours. Adding to the overcrowding are the increasing number of seats put into coach class by most airlines, often so that they can expand their first-class and business-class cabins. Northwest customers traveling in coach class are able to view any of these features on a personal video screen located in the back of the seat in front of them. |
