On the northwestern border of MS, north of Greenville; organized Feb 9, 1836 from Chickasaw cession of 1836. Name Origin: For Sweet Coahoma, known also as Coahoma Sheriff, daughter of the last Choctaw in the area. The name means 'red panther.'

Area (sq mi): 583.14 (land 554.15; water 28.99). Pop per sq mi: 52.30.
Pop 2005: 29,002. State rank: 31. Pop change: 2000-20005 -5.30%; 1990-2000 -3.30%. Pop 2000: 30,622 (White 29.10%; Black or African American 69.20%; Hispanic or Latino 0.90%; Asian 0.50%; Other 1.00%). Foreign born: 0.90%. Median age: 30.50.
Income 2000: per capita $12,558; median household $22,338; Pop below poverty level: 35.90%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $19,703-$22,728.
Unemployment 2004: 9.20%. Change from 2000: 0.90%. Median travel time to work: 24.00 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 21.90%.
