Glenrothes (glĕnrŏth`əs), town (1991 pop. 33,639), Fife, E Scotland, on the Leven River. Glenrothes was designated one of the new towns new towns, planned urban communities in Great Britain, developed by long-term loans from the central government and first authorized by the New Towns Act of 1946.

The town is intended to relieve overpopulation in Glasgow Glasgow , city (1991 pop. 688,500) and council area, S central Scotland, on the river Clyde. Glasgow is Scotland's leading seaport and largest city and is the center of the great Clydeside industrial belt.

Glenrothes

Town (pop., 1995 est.: 36,000), Fife council area and historic county, eastern Scotland. It was established in 1948 as the country's second new town to provide housing for coal miners near the experimental Rothes Colliery. When the coal-mining industry declined, new industries were developed, including the manufacture of electronic components, computers, and plastics.
