After growing millions of copies of the engineered virus, the researchers incubated them in a solution of cobalt chloride and then put the cobalt-bound virus in another solution to oxidize the metal. In an experiment that continued until 1974, almost 200 patients with leukemia and other cancers--including a six-year-old boy--were exposed to high levels of radiation from cesium and cobalt chloride at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. By heating a mixture of a porphyrin precursor and cobalt chloride to 200[degrees]C, the researchers produced sturdy, pore-riddled networks of porphyrin molecules glued together by cobalt-containing linkages. |
