In southeastern corner of AZ; organized Feb 1, 1881 (prior to statehood) from Pima County. Name Origin: For the famous Chiricahua Apache chief (c. 1812-74), who conducted raids against the U.S. after brutal treatment by U.S. Army officers and surrendered in 1871.

Area (sq mi): 6218.77 (land 6169.45; water 49.32). Pop per sq mi: 20.40.
Pop 2005: 126,106. State rank: 7. Pop change: 2000-20005 7.10%; 1990-2000 20.60%. Pop 2000: 117,755 (White 60.10%; Black or African American 4.50%; Hispanic or Latino 30.70%; Asian 1.60%; Other 17.20%). Foreign born: 12.30%. Median age: 36.90.
Income 2000: per capita $15,988; median household $32,105; Pop below poverty level: 17.70%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $19,734-$23,217.
Unemployment 2004: 5.00%. Change from 2000: 0.40%. Median travel time to work: 19.80 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 6.60%.
