In north-central AZ; organized Feb 19, 1891 (prior to statehood) from Yavapai County. Name Origin: Possibly from the Hopi Indian name, Kohnina, for the Havasupai tribe that inhabits the Grand Canyon region, which is within the county. Or derived from a Havasupai word meaning 'little water.'

Area (sq mi): 18661.21 (land 18617.42; water 43.79). Pop per sq mi: 6.70.
Pop 2005: 123,866. State rank: 8. Pop change: 2000-20005 6.50%; 1990-2000 20.40%. Pop 2000: 116,320 (White 57.60%; Black or African American 1.00%; Hispanic or Latino 10.90%; Asian 0.80%; Other 35.10%). Foreign born: 4.30%. Median age: 29.60.
Income 2000: per capita $17,139; median household $38,256; Pop below poverty level: 18.20%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $22,814-$25,345.
Unemployment 2004: 5.50%. Change from 2000: 0.10%. Median travel time to work: 19.00 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 8.10%.

    Authorities employed Black Hawk helicopters to ferry residents and visitors to higher ground near the village of Supai in Arizona's Coconino county.
    A spokesman for Coconino County Sheriff's Department told AFP that the individuals had been found and were accounted for.
