Location: Northern Arizona. Accessible by US 89 and 89A. Nearby cities/towns include Camp Verde, Clarkdale, Flagstaff, and Sedona.
Facilities: 3 cabins, 22 campgrounds, 5 group camps, dispersed camping, boat ramps, trails (300+ miles), 4 ski areas, scenic drives, ORV area (13,500 acres at Cinder Hill).
Activities: Camping, hunting, fishing, boating, canoeing, rafting, hiking, horseback riding, ORV riding, cross-country and downhill skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling.
Special Features: Includes Arizona's highest point at 12,633 feet atop Mount Humphreys; Oak Creek Canyon, with red and pink sandstone cliffs; Mogollan Rim, a rugged escarpment that forms the southern limit of the Colorado Plateau.

Wagner wrote that both these sites are within the Coconino National Forest or on other public lands in Arizona.
I'd already taken a short walk on the drive up from Phoenix - in the lush woodland of the Coconino national forest - but once you get north of Flagstaff, the light and landscape change dramatically.
