Crusoe processor
An x86-based CPU chip from Transmeta that is designed for Internet appliances and other handheld devices that require batteries. It consumes significantly less power than mobile x86 chips from Intel, AMD and others because it places more of the processing burden on the software. Designed to run Windows and Linux applications, Crusoe uses a software translation layer known as "Code Morphing" that turns x86 instructions into Crusoe instructions. This translation layer allows the chip to be used for other instruction sets as well. See Transmeta.

Efficeon TM8000 microprocessors are low-power x86-compatible processors based upon a new silicon microarchitecture and a redesigned version of code morphing software.
Key changes include a complete rewrite of the code morphing software which feeds instructions to the architecture's Very Long Instruction Word core.
NEC engineered the Versa DayLite and Versa UltraLite notebook computers with the Transmeta Crusoe processor to leverage the chip's advanced Code Morphing Software and LongRun Power Management that matches system performance levels with application demands, significantly lowering power consumption while helping to conserve battery life.
