cryptanalysis

The art of recovering original data (the plaintext) that has been encrypted (turned into ciphertext) without having access to the correct key used in the encryption process. When new encryption algorithms are introduced, cryptanalysis determines how hard it is to break the code. See encryption.

The Submarine, like the author's previous Encyclopedia of the Cold War and American Codebreakers, leads readers into sharing a sense of fascination, into an urge to dig deeper and know more.
He does not know the identity of the American codebreakers, but he assumes that those involved in MAGIC by 1941 were predisposed towards perceiving Japanese activities in an increasingly alarmist fashion.
Stephenson's technical virtuosity is supplemented by his extensive erudition - one finds allusions ranging from David Kahn's famous history of cryptology, The Codebreakers, to World War II narratives like The Man Who Never Was, Das Boot, and Guadalcanal Diary.
