Cody, John (Patrick) (1920–82) Catholic prelate; born in St. Louis, Mo. After ordination (1931) and service in the Vatican Secretariat of State, he held administrative posts in the U.S.A. Appointed coadjutor bishop of New Orleans (1961), he implemented the school integration plan of ailing Archbishop Joseph Rummel, succeeding to the see (1964) after Rummel's death. Named archbishop of Chicago (1965) and a cardinal (1967), he alienated clergy by his allegedly authoritarian policies. An investigation into charges that he had diverted church funds to benefit a female friend was suspended after his death.
