In east-central IL south of Urbana; organized Dec 25, 1830 from Clark and Edgar counties. Name Origin: For Edward Coles (1768-1868), humanitarian and IL governor (1822-26).

Area (sq mi): 510.07 (land 508.29; water 1.78). Pop per sq mi: 100.50.
Pop 2005: 51,065. State rank: 28. Pop change: 2000-20005 -4.00%; 1990-2000 3.00%. Pop 2000: 53,196 (White 94.60%; Black or African American 2.30%; Hispanic or Latino 1.40%; Asian 0.80%; Other 1.50%). Foreign born: 1.60%. Median age: 30.80.
