a quantitative index of the fecal contamination of water or food products.

The coli index is determined by the number of microbes— normal inhabitants of the human intestine (mainly Escherichia coli)—per liter or kilogram of substrate. The coli index is an important criterion for the control of sanitation and hygiene.
