On the southwestern Gulf coast of FL, west of Fort Lauderdale; organized May 8, 1923 from Lee and Monroe counties. Name Origin: For Barron Gift Collier (1873-1939), a promoter active in the development of southern FL.

Pop 2005: 307,242. State rank: 15. Pop change: 2000-20005 22.20%; 1990-2000 65.30%. Pop 2000: 251,377 (White 73.80%; Black or African American 4.50%; Hispanic or Latino 19.60%; Asian 0.60%; Other 8.80%). Foreign born: 18.30%. Median age: 44.10.
Income 2000: per capita $31,195; median household $48,289; Pop below poverty level: 10.30%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $39,403-$41,513.
