On the southeastern border of TX panhandle, southwest of Amarillo; organized Aug 21, 1876 from Bexar and Fannin counties. Name Origin: For Maj. James T. Collinsworth (1806-38), aide to Gen. Sam Houston (1793-1863), Republic of TX senator (1836), and first chief justice (1837). Clerical spelling error was allowed to stand.
