The S-shaped portion of the colon between the descending colon and the rectum.

The left colon consisted of splenic flexure, descending colon, sigmoid colon, rectosigmoid junction, and the rectal ampulla.
In contrast to the right colon, sigmoid and rectal carcinomas appear to be associated with a higher incidence of osseous metastases, favoring the pelvis and lumbosacral spine.
