Brigadier 

(1) A military officer’s rank between colonel and major general in Russia from 1722 to 1799; in France during 1667-1788 an officer’s rank for commanders of infantry and cavalry brigades and later, the rank of a junior noncommissioned officer in the cavalry; in Germany the title (according to function) of artillery brigade commanders until 1874.

(2) Leader of a production brigade.
