Colonial National Historical Park

Colonial National Historical Park, 9,350 acres (3,785 hectares), SE Va., mainly on the peninsula between the York and James rivers; created 1930 as Colonial National Monument, renamed 1936. The park embraces a historic region that includes Yorktown Yorktown, historic town (1990 pop. 270), seat of York co., SE Va., on the York River 10 mi (16 km) from its mouth on Chesapeake Bay; settled 1631, laid out 1691. It is included in the Colonial National Historical Park (see National Parks and Monuments, table).

Colonial National Historical Park

Historical reservation, southeastern Virginia, U.S. Covering some 15 sq mi (38 sq km) and centred on a peninsula between the York and James rivers, it was first established as a national monument in 1930 and includes colonial and Revolutionary sites. It embraces Cape Henry, Jamestown, and Yorktown and includes the Colonial Parkway, a 23-mi (37-km) scenic route linking Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown.

Established: Authorized as Colonial National Monument on July 3, 1930; established on December 30, 1930; redesignated on June 5, 1936.
Location: On the Virginia peninsula between the James and York rivers, a short distance from I-64. The 23-mile Colonial Parkway connects Jamestown and Yorktown, passing near restored Colonial Williamsburg along the way.
Facilities: Picnic area, rest rooms (é), bicycle trail, visitor centers(é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities: Bicycling, auto touring, ranger-guided tours.
Special Features: This park encompasses most of Jamestown Island, site of the first permanent English settlement; Yorktown, scene of the culminating battle of the American Revolution in 1781; a 23-mile parkway connecting these and other colonial sites with Williamsburg; and Cape Henry Memorial, which marks the approximate site of the first landing of Jamestown's colonists in 1607. Yorktown National Cemetery adjoins the park.
