Coma cluster [′kō·mə ‚kləs·tər] (astronomy) A group of over 1000 bright galaxies having a recession velocity of about 4300 miles (6900 kilometers) per second. An open cluster of about 100 stars at a distance of about 80 parsecs (1.5 × c1015miles or 2.5 × 1015kilometers). How to thank TFD for its existence? That's when Fritz Zwicky noticed that galaxies in the Coma cluster were spinning so rapidly that all the visible material wasn't enough to keep them from flying apart. A decade ago, Kronberg and other coworkers made such a calculation for Earth's largest nearby galaxy cluster--the Coma cluster in the constellation Coma Berenices. These galaxies are already on the scrimmage line, ready to collapse into a big pile, which is going to be a cluster like the [present-day, well-observed] Coma cluster. |
