In south-central TX, north of San Antonio; organized Mar 24, 1846 from Bexar and Gonzales counties. Name Origin: From Spanish 'basin,' descriptive of an area drained by a stream.

Area (sq mi): 574.59 (land 561.45; water 13.15). Pop per sq mi: 171.00.
Pop 2005: 96,018. State rank: 38. Pop change: 2000-20005 23.10%; 1990-2000 50.50%. Pop 2000: 78,021 (White 74.80%; Black or African American 0.90%; Hispanic or Latino 22.60%; Asian 0.50%; Other 9.50%). Foreign born: 4.80%. Median age: 39.00.
Income 2000: per capita $21,914; median household $46,147; Pop below poverty level: 8.60%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $29,133-$29,486.
Unemployment 2004: 5.10%. Change from 2000: 1.60%. Median travel time to work: 28.20 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 45.90%.
