completing the square [kəm′plēd·iŋthə ′skwer]
(mathematics)
A method of solving quadratic equations, consisting of moving all terms to the left side of the equation, dividing through by the coefficient of the square term, and adding to both sides a number sufficient to make the left side a perfect square.
