The first of the boards appeared in 1979, when a snowstorm provoked hobbyists Ward Christensen and Randy Suess to hack together something they called EBBS, the Computerized Bulletin Board System, for their Chicago-area computer users group.
Part of this original business involved using computerized Bulletin Board Systems to promote his venture.
Available equipment--which may include wheelchairs, scooters, vans, wheelchair lifts, augmentative communication equipment, specialized computers, hospital beds, prosthetic devices, stair lifts, walkers and crutches--may be listed in a newsletter or on a BBS (a computerized bulletin board system accessible through a computer modem).
