Chambord, Comte De
(Henri Charles Ferdinand Marie Dieudonné d’Artois). Born Sept. 29, 1820, in Paris; died Aug. 24, 1883, at Frohsdorf, Austria. Duke of Bordeaux. Grandson of the French king Charles X, who abdicated in his favor after the July Revolution of 1830. The Comte de Chambord became an emigré in 1830. He carried on intensive negotiations with the French monarchists, who in 1873 were prepared to restore the monarchy and make him King Henry V of France. The Comte de Chambord was, however, frightened by the masses’ opposition to the restoration plan and, at the crucial moment, declined to lead the conspiracy. Want to thank TFD for its existence? No references found | The laicization of public schools, the failure of the ralliement, and passage of the Separation Law of 1905 (by which the basilica became municipal property), reinstated the counterrevolutionary character of the Sacred Heart cult, but this, combined with the death of the comte de Chambord, the last Bourbon heir, reflected the growing marginalization of French Catholicism. To be a royalist in France in those days could mean one of three things: Legitimist -- the Bourbons whose heir the Comte de Chambord lived in exile in Austria; Orleanist -- led by the Comte de Paris; or Napoleonist. |
