Condé, Louis I de Bourbon 

Born May 7, 1530, in Vendôme; died Mar. 13, 1569, in Jarnac. Prince, leader of the French Calvinists (Huguenots). Founder of the house of condé (lateral line of the Bourbons).

The prince was the younger brother of Antoine Bourbon. In 1559 he headed the Huguenot aristocracy and was one of the organizers of the Amboise plot against the Guises. During the religious wars he commanded the Huguenot army (the battles of Dreux in 1562 and St. Denis in 1567). During the battle of Jarnac (1569) he was taken prisoner and killed.
