constant angular velocity

Also found in: Acronyms, Wikipedia 0.01 sec.
(storage)constant angular velocity - (CAV) A disk driving scheme in which the angular velocity of the disk is kept constant. This means that the linear velocity of the disk be larger when the reading or writing the outer tracks. The disadvantage of this technique is that the read/write speed varies from track to track. However, as mechanical stability puts an upper limit on the angular velocity (and not the linear velocity) this allows the full potential of the drive is used.

In order to achieve orbital motion a crankshaft (not shown) with eccentricity (e) rotating at a constant angular velocity ([omega]) is used to drive the top plate.
2, with the long elastomer strip or belt extending from pulley 1 (radius r) to the concentric larger pulley 2 (radius R), the pulleys are shown rotated clockwise at a constant angular velocity of [omega].
3 is an orthogonal cylindrical coordinate system (r,0,z), in which the origin is set at the center of the rotating ring, which is rotating at a constant angular velocity, and the fluid between both rings flows outward.
