Brîncoveanu, Constantin

Born 1654; died Aug. 26, 1714. Ruler of Wallachia.

Brîncoveanu’s rule began in 1688; before then, he was a major logothete. During his reign the palace in Mogoşoaia was built as well as a number of monasteries; four printing presses and several schools were also established. In 1703, Brincoveanu entered into diplomatic relations with Russia. During Peter I’s Prut campaign of 1711 he held a temporizing position. In 1714, Brîncoveanu and his family were seized by the Turks and executed in Constantinople.
