Consumers' Union, product testing and rating organization founded (1936) to provide consumers with information and counsel regarding major retail goods and services. Through its monthly Consumer Reports (circulation c.4.5 million) and its Internet site (c.325,000 subscribers), the union reports on a diverse range of products, from major appliances and automobiles to health-care and family-planning aids. Chuck canned light tuna, the Consumers Union advises pregnant women. A recent study by Consumers Union, the non-profit publisher of Consumer Reports magazine, found that insurers were charging good drivers living in predominantly African-American and Latino Zip codes in California substantially more for auto insurance than good drivers living in predominantly white communities. The Yonkers Industrial Development Agency (IDA) has given preliminary approval to the nonprofit consumer advocacy group Consumers Union to borrow $10 million for the expansion of its headquarters and to refinance $39 million in debt borrowed through the IDA in 1989. |
