consumption tax

Levy such as an excise tax, a sales tax, or a tariff paid directly or indirectly by the consumer. Consumption taxes fall more heavily on lower-income than on upper-income groups because people with less money consume a larger proportion of their income than those with more money. See also progressive tax, regressive tax.

CUMHURIYET ---------- GOVERNMENT TO STICK WITH REDUCED CONSUMPTION TAX The government said it would continue to collect a reduced special consumption tax on vehicles of under 1,600 cc and on durable goods as part of its efforts to revive a crisis-hit economy.
The General Consumption Tax (GCT) is also usually payable upon entry.
Byline: BEIJING: China's ministry of finance has decided to keep fuel consumption tax rates unchanged in 2009, the ministry said on its website, an apparent move to quash talk that it might raise the tax.
