continuous data protection The automatic, continuous copying of data onto a backup storage device. Each time a document is saved, that version is backed up automatically. With traditional backup procedures, data are backed up at prescribed intervals, such as once per hour or once per day. With continuous data protection, documents can be restored to any editing point.
