Cooper Creek

an intermittent river in E central Australia, in the Channel Country: rises in central Queensland and flows generally southwest, reaching Lake Eyre only during wet-year floods; scene of the death of the explorers Burke and Wills in 1861; the surrounding basin provides cattle pastures after the floods subside. Total length: 1420 km (880 miles)

Cooper Creek

 

(known as the Barcoo before its junction with the Thomson River), a river in the central part of Australia. Length, 1,400 km; basin area, 285,000 sq km. Cooper Creek originates in the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range and flows across the sparse and barren plains of the Great Artesian Basin. The river is fed by ground water and rain. Some parts of the river, particularly in the lower course, frequently go dry. The average water flow is 70 cu m per sec. During the occasional high floods from heavy summer rainfalls, it reaches landlocked Lake Eyre.
