Coppée, François Édouard Joachim

Born Jan. 12 (or 26), 1842, in Paris; died there May 23, 1908. French writer. Member of the Academic Francaise from 1884.

Coppée was a friend of the Parnassian poets and initially published his verses in their magazines and collections. His first collection of verses, The Treasure House, was published in 1865. Coppee later composed sentimental, petit-bourgeois narrative poems, comedies, novellas, tales, and publicistic works. Between 1899 and 1902 he served as president of a reactionary organization, the League of the French Fatherland.
