Coriolis, Gaspard Gustave de 

Born May 21, 1792, in Paris; died there Sept. 19, 1843. French physicist. Member of the Paris Academy of Sciences (1836). From 1838, directed studies at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris.

Coriolis gave the final formulation of the theory of relative motion, introducing the concepts of Coriolis force and Coriolis acceleration. Also of importance were his works devoted to the rating of machine performances and the collision of elastic spheres.
