Cornhusker
a machine or the working element of a corn harvesting combine. A cornhusker strips the husks from the ears of corn. In the USSR, the OPP-5 semimounted machine is used. The husking device consists of eight pairs of rollers: each member of each pair turns toward the other. The pickup unit picks up the ears, and a conveyer drops them into the husking device. The cleaned ears go onto a sorting conveyer, where unhusked ears are removed manually and put on the rollers for a second husking. Diseased and underdeveloped ears are thrown out. An elevator drops the cleaned ears into a wagon or arranges them in a pile. The working parts of the machine are driven by the power takeoff of the tractor. The husker has a productivity of 4–5 tons/hr. The husking device of a corn-harvesting combine has the same design. The cornhuskers used outside the USSR function similarly. V. E.
