Prescott advised surgeons to focus on three supraglouic elements during the physical examination: the epiglottis, the aryepiglottic folds, and the mucosa over the corniculate cartilages on the arytenoids.
The procedures that have been advocated include (1) division of the aryepiglottic fold, (2) partial amputation of the epiglottis, (3) suture of the epiglottis to the base of the tongue (epiglottoplasty), (4) removal of redundant supra-arytenoid mucosa and the lateral borders of the epiglottis, and (5) removal of the cuneiform and corniculate cartilages and the surrounding mucosa.
