Science a number or quantity added to or subtracted from a scientific or mathematical calculation or observation to increase its accuracy correction [kə′rek·shən] (science and technology) A quantity added to a calculated or observed value to obtain the true value. Correction the rectification of typographical errors in a proof. In hand or Monotype composition, correction involves replacement of erroneous characters or lines; in Linotype, incorrect lines are replaced with corrected lines. Large-scale correction leads to repaging—that is, repositioning of the composed matter or other elements from one column to another. In photocomposition, correction involves the removal of incorrect lines from the positive or negative and their replacement with correct lines or replacement of the entire positive or negative.
